Open to Tippie and non-Tippie majors at the University of Iowa. Launching Fall of 2026.
Required courses (9 credits)
MKTG:4201 – Professional Selling (3): Master the foundations of modern selling: listening, questioning, connection, and trust-building. Includes role-plays, active listening drills, habit development, and first exposure to CRM and AI tools.
MKTG:4200 – Sales Management (3): Develop the time management, interpersonal communication, forecasting, coaching, and AI-enabled analysis skills required to thrive in today’s workplace. You’ll learn how sales teams function, how to motivate performance, and how to balance individual and team goals in a real-world environment.
MKTG:4203 – Advanced Power Selling (3) (new in the Fall 2026): Students level up with advanced discovery, negotiation, multi-stakeholder selling, complex account management, leadership communication, and AI-supported strategy. Includes live projects with partner companies.
Required internship (0 credits)
BUS:3100 – Sales Internship: Students gain hands-on experience working with partner companies across industries. Internships are essential for full-time hiring and prepare students to deliver measurable results.
If a student cannot secure a summer internship, they may complete approved projects through the Strategic Sales Lab, which offers:
- AI-based training tools
- Partner-company simulations
- Remote participation options
Electives (choose any 3 for 9 credits)
MKTG:3104 – Sports Marketing: Explore fan segmentation, sponsorship, ticketing, branding, and analytics within the sports industry.
MKTG:3600 – Product & Pricing: Learn how businesses create and capture value through product design and pricing strategy using real business models.
MKTG:4405 – Sales & Promotion: Study professional selling and promotional campaign planning, execution, and analysis.
MTKG:4410 – Customer Relationship Management (CRM): Use data and analytics to understand customers, measure value, and improve marketing performance.
How to Declare for the Certificate
If you are interested in pursuing the certificate, you should start with Introduction to Marketing Strategy (MKTG:3000). Get a feel for what interests you, then declare for the certificate by by meeting with a Tippie academic advisor during our daily drop-in hours.
To earn the certificate, students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in all coursework.
